East Auckland Series – Howick Sailing Club 30th October 2016

East Auckland Series – Howick Sailing Club 30th October 2016

Well done to all our Opti and Starling sailors who made it to Howick Sailing Club on Sunday 30th October for the first leg of the East Auckland Series. Conditions were great although perhaps a little breezy at times and the water temperature still a little cold for those that capsized.

Wonderfully hosted by Howick Sailing Club. Great racing, great food and a huge selection of spot prizes.

Congratulations to our winners;
Opti Open – William Beauchamp
Starling – Jonathan Turnbull

Overall winner of the first leg goes to Howick Sailing Club

Sir Peter Blake Regatta 3-4 December 2016

Sir Peter Blake Regatta 3-4 December 2016

We had 18 sailors competing in the Sir Peter Blake regatta at Torbay this weekend. GBC was represented in Opti Green, Opti Open, Starling, Starling Green and Laser.  All the best to all of you. Two years ago we had four Optis and a similar number of Starlings. It’s tremendous to have GBC much more prominent in the fleets now.

A huge thanks to Elliott Kernohan, the Mannings, the Stills, Tanya and Steve, and Kevin Green for getting club assets or others’ dinghies to Torbay. It’s a marathon effort but well worth it. And extra special thanks to Elliott for coordinating everything. Having a solid plan has paid huge dividends.

Great result by Claudia and Russell in the Green Fleet, especially the last race where the pair led the race nearly all the way around.  Claudia getting a 2nd and Russell just behind……….. great stuff.   Good on Jack for leading the GBC sailors in Open fleet.

Nespresso National Youth Training Week 5 – 11th December 2016

Nespresso National Youth Training Week 5 – 11th December 2016

4 of our Sailors headed off on Monday to the Nespresso National Youth Training Week at Kawau. Brittany Clark, Matt Brewer, Jonathan Turnbull, and Sam Liddell are all representing GBC up against 6 other teams during the week.

The National Youth Training Week was established in 1989. Each year Yacht Clubs from around New Zealand are invited to send a four person youth crew to share in the intensive sailing experience synonymous with our world-renowned RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme. The week of training gives young sailors the opportunity to receive intensive theoretical and practical instruction in the various aspects of competitive keelboat racing in a disciplined environment.

Yachts: The 10 Elliott 7m training boats owned by the RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme are used for the training week.
