GBC East Auckland Series – Leg 2 – Feb 2017

Sunday’s second leg of the East Auckland Series was a great success, with fleets of Mistrals, Starlings, Open and Green Fleet Optimists all enjoying some of the nicest sailing conditions we’ve had this season.  There were more than fifty boats on the water, which is always a thrill at GBC. Our special guest Race Officer, ex-GBC Commodore John Woodyear-Smith, set a course so the sailors could stretch their legs, and got things underway promptly and steadily to make the most of the tide.

Congratulations to Andrea Hawke (HSC), William Beauchamp (GBC) and Jack Culloty (GBC) who won the Green Fleet, Opti Open and Starling fleets respectively.  And well done to the young crews of the Mistrals, who mixed it up in a series of tight races across the channel.  GBC retains the Ivan Raos Memorial Trophy and will compete to retain it in a few weeks’ time, on 12 March, at Maraetai.

Starling and P-Class Motuihe Trip – Feb 2017

Starling and P-Class Motuihe Trip – Feb 2017

On Friday a group of ten Starling and P-class sailors set off in their dinghies to camp on Motuihe for the weekend.  Despite heavy rain for much of Friday, the forecast was for better weather and Nick Brewer sent the order at 1500: “All go”! The teenage sailors enjoyed a weekend of mucking around on boats, jumping off wharves, searching for tuatara and kiwi, late nights, and sleeping under “canvas”. Most of all they got a chance to enjoy each other’s company for more than just an afternoon, which, I’m sure, will build deep and lasting friendships on and off the water for life.

Thanks so much to Nick for all of his planning and leadership, and to Craig Liddell and Kevin Green for helping make sure everything was safe and sound en route, on the island and on our return.  See our facebook page for more.
