About Us

The Glendowie Boating Club, founded in 1949, is situated at the mouth of the Tamaki River in the eastern suburbs of Auckland. The mouth of the river is an ideal environment for this family oriented club. Being tidal, the program varies from week to week but most Sundays from spring to autumn see some sailing.

The club has four classes sailing most days, Mistrals, Arrows, Starlings and Optimists with fleets of around 60 to 70 boats active on each sailing day. The GBC Learn to Sail Squad is the ideal training ground for aspiring sailors. Experienced Club Instructors coach the Squad out on the water every Sunday during the sailing season. The club also offers development programmes for every level.

The club manages the Starling class so is known as the "Home of the Starling" and the fleet is growing rapidly. The Starling is the ideal boat for young sailors coming from the Optimist. The Arrow has been sailed at the club since its inception and has proven to be a great two person boat to introduce sailing to the family. The young ones grow in confidence and Mum or Dad get to enjoy a good sail at the same time. The Mistral is a fun two person boat for a father/son, mother/daughter, 2 teenager or 2 adult combination to sail.

There is ample parking available in Glendowie Road for sailors and spectators alike and boat ramps have been built to provide easy access to the beach for rigging and launching. Within the club house, there is room for 140 centreboarders and dinghies in addition to the mooring area for keelers. Other facilities include a lounge, control tower, galley and ample decks very close to the action for maximum spectator enjoyment.
