Arrow Class
|
|
|
The Arrow is a fun boat for adults and children alike and provides a fantastic basis for adults and young children to learn to sail together.
With a spinnaker there is plenty for the forward hand to do and for those who love sailing single handed the class has adapted the rig to allow the spinnaker to be launched and retrieved while sailing alone.
In recent years the Arrow has gained a following amongst the parents who were not content with merely watching their kids sailing from the club deck. Sailing an Arrow gives you an entirely different view point of your own kids on the water and it's great to share
the sailing experience with them.
The Arrow sailors tend to take a more relaxed approach to the hobby and would welcome any people interested in sailing irrespective of your previous sailing experience. We try and get together for a practice session on Wednesdays and we usually join the races on
club Sundays.
Both the practices and races are easygoing affairs, newcomers are welcome.
Historically, when Glendowie Boating Club was first established in 1949 the committee decided that they needed a class of boat to suit the type of members. The immediate population consisted mainly of young families.
At the time there was nothing suitable and they commissioned Jack Logan (of the famous New Zealand yachting Logan family) to design a centreboard yacht that was easy to build, easily sailed either single handed or with forward hand and could be also used to go fishing with an
outboard on the stern. The result was the Arrow Class.

Since the first boat in 1950 in excess of 180 boats were built and sailed at Glendowie, Howick and Onehunga clubs. At the GBC there continues an enthusiastic core of Arrow sailors keeping the class alive more than 60 years later.
