Entries at the Auckland Anniversary Regatta on Monday 1st February showed the increased interest in racing from the younger club members. There were 7 entries in the Optimist Green Fleet, 3 in Optimist Open, and 5 in the Starling class.

The conditions were very trying with the Kohi Tower reporting an average of 22knots and peak of 37knots, with the wind against the tide creating a large swell.

An update will be posted when full results are available, but we can report that Cooper Hopman won the first race for the Optimist Green Fleet, with George Kirkman 3rd. Cooper ended the day on 4th overall, with George 5th.

Things were busy down at GBC over the last week of the holidays with LTS and Upskillers courses being followed by a Race Clinic for the more experienced Opti sailors.

The LTS and Upskiller courses were well attended, with the Race Clinic in the last week of the holidays having 16 participants. They enjoyed 3 days of coaching in a variety of conditions with the highlights being a sail out to Motuihi Island and back followed by a sleepover at the club. Many thanks to Angus and Deb for their organisation and support efforts. Also thanks go to the coaches for their input over these courses, it would not be possible without them. The kids all remarked on both how much they had learnt and enjoyed themselves.

On a similar vein George Kirkman and Cooper Hopman went to a 4 day Opti Camp at Hamilton Yacht Club. This camp was well organised and after four days of constant sailing they both came away a lot more confident around their boats and well versed in rigging their own boats from scratch each day.

We now look forward to these sailors taking their new found skills and confidence onto the Regatta Circuit, with a number of events on the calendar prior to the Nationals.

The 13-15th of November saw Louis Mayo, Henry Haslett, Stephanie & George Kirkman take part in the North Island Optimist Championships in Napier.

After having the races cancelled on Friday due to 20kn winds, there were 4 races completed on Saturday in light-moderate conditions & 3 races on Sunday in light and shifty conditions. Each of the sailors registered at least one top 10 result, with Louis capping off the weekend with a win in the last race.

The final results had Loius 8th, Henry 10th, Stephanie 21st, and George 29th.

Thank you to Ben Lowe for being there to offer coaching advice.

Congratulations to all concerned and the facilities at Napier Yacht Club were amazing to see, with acres of garages, multiple slipways, and awesome clubrooms, they put on an excellent regatta.
