Glendowie Boating Club offers three levels of Coaching and training for Optimist Dinghies.
For first time sailors, nine years or over, we run a Learn to Sail Programme, where tuition is provided by YNZ qualified instructors under the direction of the Club Sailing Master. Yachting New Zealand Level One Certificates are issued to skippers
successfully completing the programme. This course is run over eight weeks with two intakes each season, September and February. The course is run on club sailing days being Sundays, so that new members quickly feel part of the club and see what the racing fleets
offer. The Learn to Sail programme covers wind direction and weather, rigging, rope work, safety, basic rules, launching and recovery, and basic sailing skills, through a mix of onshore demonstration and practical sailing. Participants are required to provide their own
boat, or rent one from the club for the duration of the course, and parental attendance at each session is essential.
The second level is Upskillers. This is also a 10 week course, run on Sundays, and reinforces sailing skills from the Lean to sail course. Participants must have their own boat.
The third level is Learn to Race (YNZ Level 2). Here we prepare the sailor for Green Fleet racing, teaching them race procedure, race preparation, starting sequences, racing rules mark rounding and so on. Just before they move into the Green Fleet, they are given
some full-length practice races with their own starts.
Holiday Learn to Sail Program
This Learn to Sail programme is offered as a Holiday programme, which is a 5 day, 3 1/2 hours per day course held in the school holidays. Parents are not required to be present for this programme, although parents are welcome at any time. Sailors are advantaged in the
long term if parents take an active interest in learning rigging and basic techniques.
Next Holiday Learn-to-sail course starts 16-20 January 2012, 9.00am start.

program
The School's emphasis is on providing a solid grounding in sailing and seamanship skills in a safe and fun environment. Sailing is a great sport for life, teaching self-reliance and confidence. The Club actively encourages continued participation in the sport, and this also needs
your commitment and support.
Next Sunday Learn-to-sail course starts 5 February 2012, 3.00pm.

The coaches were wonderful with the children and our boys have gained in boating confidence hugely.
The boys have thoroughly enjoyed every minute and learnt a great deal."
