National Youth Training Week - December 2011
Arkady, Russell, Logan and Scott had an amazing week up at the National Youth Training Week
at Kawau Island. I believe they came second overall, which is a great result! Well done boys!

Russell's feedback:
We all had a really good time during the week, and I think I can say we all learnt a huge amount.
So here's what happened: On Tuesday we were lucky enough to get Frankie on our yacht to coach us. It was a perfect day for learning how to sail one of these boats, 5-10 knots of wind, and we were just doing drills with the spinnaker. We had a small practice race at the
end of the day when the breeze had dropped to next to nothing, and you might want to confirm with the others but I think we ended up second in that race. Tuesday was great, the wind had picked up to around 15-18 knots, and again we had Frankie on the boat, this time they
let us loose with the gennakers. After a few drills we did some fleet races where we ended up basically match racing keri keri yacht club every time (this carried on through every single fleet race we did for the rest of the week). The next day we did some solid fleet
racing throughout the day and got some solid placings. Unfortunately on Thursday there was no wind so they took us around to one of the beaches for some rugby and lunch. Friday was a very long day out on the water, we were fleet racing again, but the wind was light and
shifting all over the place. After what we thought would be the last race the wind got up again to a nice steady breeze, so they kept us racing. I think we were back on the dock around 7:30pm. The next day was supposed to be the round Kawau race. Unfortunately it was
blowing 25 knots NE so there were huge waves and they decided to call it off. Instead we did a long course in the lee of the island, placing 3rd. Sunday was disappointing though, as it was blowing 40 knots so they cancelled the race home, instead we took the bus back.
But overall it was a great week.
Scott's feedback:
I really enjoyed the week away at Kawau. I really got a lot out of it and enjoyed sailing on a keeler (my first experience at this). I think it will help me a lot with my Starling sailing I got to recognize the lifts and knocks. One of the best
parts of the week for me was the fact that we did so well in the racing we were really competitive and this made it really good. |
